Mark Cavendish narrowly missed out on victory at the UCI road world championships, finishing second in the men's road race.

The Manx Missile was well-placed in the final stages of the event in Doha, but missed out on the finishing line.

The 31-year-old was led home by teammate Adam Blythe, but he lost the British champion's wheel in the final metres, allowing sprint rival Peter Sagan to claim the title for the second consecutive year.

Cavendish previously won the world title in 2011.
