Surveys are going to be carried out over the next three days in a bid to improve traffic flow and road safety around Douglas and Onchan.
The Department of Infrastructure wants to build a picture of vehicle movements in order to find out which routes are busiest.
As well as cars, the manual surveys will take a note of pedestrians and cyclists, while cameras will be used to record how long each vehicle stays in one area.
The data collected will be used when the Highways Division plans future changes to road layouts, junctions and traffic lights.
The survey will take place over three hours this morning and again from 4 o'clock this afternoon, before resuming at 11am on Saturday.
