Fire crews helped the injured rider onto a stretcher

A competitor taking part in the End to End Mountain Bike Challenge had to be rescued by fire crews following a crash in one of the Island's plantations.

The race's marshalls contacted the fire service after the man fell at speed in the Arrasey plantation shortly before 3pm yesterday.

Two six-wheel drive vehicles were needed to access the remote area, helping the injured rider onto a stretcher.

The man was transfered to St John Ambulance at Glen Rushen mines, and needed treatment for leg and arm injuries.

The race was won by English rider Ben Thomas for a third straight year.
