Most of the action took place off island this weekend as five Club members travelled to York to compete in a Double WA1440 round shot over two days. Conditions were wet and windy which made things difficult over the longer distances.
Tilly Ashton was once again the star of the show. Having moved up an age group this was Tilly’s first competition to include the longer 40m distance. Tilly took it in her stride however, and shot a Junior Bowman score of 1108 straight off the bat in spite of the weather. On the second day of competition Tilly shot personal best scores at every distance to post a score of 1181 which beat the old Club record by 47 points. Her combined total of 2289 gave her second place in her age group.
Josh Trafford struggled with the longer distances on both days but still took the win for the single and double u18s WA1440. Josh also shot a Double 720 (72 arrows at 70m x 2) round on the Bank Holiday Monday which saw him come second in the u18 group.
Dave, Ethan and Rhys Moore led the attack in the Gents Compound division, with Rhys posting the best scores of the three. Rhys shot 1300+ scores on both days but just missed getting his third Master Bowman score by 1 point on the first day and 4 points on the second. Dave Moore had a difficult 90m on the first day and a difficult 90 & 50m on the second day which put a dent in his overall score. Ethan managed a pb at the 50m in the first round but struggled with it in the second. Like Josh they shot the Double 720 round on the Monday which is over 50m for Compound bows. Rhys finished the day on 1309 (658/651) while Dave shot a new pb of 645 in the morning session and then another new pb in the afternoon of 646. Ethan Moore’s lack of practice due to family commitments showed as he posted an overall score of 1187.
Meanwhile back at Greeba conditions were challenging and everyone except Toby Young seemed to struggle. Danny Cowin was unwell and only just managed to see out the morning session. Billy Lightfoot intended to shoot for the whole day but had had enough by lunchtime. Colin Moore started well but faded over the session. Joy Gough who was suffering from sciatica had to stop shooting part way through the afternoon due the pain. Only Pete Mumford, Barbara Harris and Toby Young managed to put in a full day’s shooting. Harris shot well below her best missing once at 70m and three times at 50m. Pete Mumford put in a solid round that pleased him in places. Toby Young however just kept on going and added 8 points to his pb for the round and break the u14’s Club Record into the bargain. Jacob Brookes and Nathan Kinrade turn for afternoon but neither of them got anywhere near their pbs.
