Police have defended having to continually close the Mountain Road saying safety is the main priority. 

 

They've taken to social media saying they have no choice but to "shut it down and make it safe" after a crash is reported. 

 

Since the route went one-way last week it's been closed numerous times - officers say they can't have traffic approaching them at high speed whilst dealing with an incident.

 

In addition Sergeant Steven Lapsley is warning motorists to expect lengthy delays if the crash is deemed serious:
