Extra jail time for Ramsey man who smuggled phone into prison

Thu, 26 May 2016

A serving prisoner has had 12 weeks added to his sentence for smuggling a mobile phone into the Jurby lock-up.

26-year-old Jake Ford was concealing the device internally - along with a USB cable and an earpiece - during sentencing for drug offences on February 16th.

In the three days that followed he made and received numerous calls and text messages - the haul was later discovered hidden in a bag of sugar during a search of his cell.

At Douglas Courthouse this week his advocate described it as a "stupid mistake" saying it was for his "personal use" and was not being used for criminal activity.

He added that planned assistance from the Mental Health Service in the near future would "help everyone in the long term".

Sentencing him for introducing articles to the prison Deputy High Bailiff Jayne Hughes said it was a "premeditated offence" which "undermines the whole purpose of a custodial sentence".
