Sulby were the visitors on Monday evening when they shot their League match against IoMSC Douglas at Sinclair range and the home team were victorious in Divisions 1 & 2 with a consolation win for the visitors in Division 3. The way that Sulby have been producing good results in recent weeks, it may have been expected by some, to be a much closer match than actually occurred with the home team once again hitting 490, seven clear points ahead of a strong Sulby side.
In November, IoMSC Douglas introduced Sharon Drysdale to target rifle shooting having never held a rifle prior and on Monday evening Sharon proved what can result from dedication and determination – she posted the top score of the evening with Mike Duncalf, both hitting 99. Thomas Clague recorded 98 with Mike Clague and David Humphrey both on 97. For the northern side, Will Quayle matched Drysdale and Duncalf with a 99 followed by a quartet of 96’s from Junior Fergus Coulter, Mark Cain, Teddy Sayle and Orry Teare.

Suzanne Curphey shoots the latest 100 against Castletown
Laxey welcomed Castletown to their Glen Gardens range and the result appears to be quite close, just three points separated the Division 1 teams. Laxey’s Suzanne Curphey held the top slot for the home team with a 100, her first of the season. John Wood posted a 98 behind Suzanne with a 97 going to Gemma Kermode. Garry Kneale and Harry Creevy both posted 94’s making up the Division 1 team, it is unusual for Laxey to have a 94 in Division 1. For the southern team, Steve Gardner produced a 98 with Richie Arthur and Nigel Christian both recording 96 and Lauren Cooper and John-Paul Bridson both on 95.

Dalton-Brown wins the Isle of Man Shooting Club Junior Championship in fine fashion.
The Isle of Man Shooting Club have tried to bring to the fore, the talent of the youth within the Isle of Man Rifle Association and this year is the second that the IoM Shooting Club Junior Championship has been held with the intention of introducing the youth to 50 metre target shooting. Recent results in the IoM Rifle Association’s Winter Indoor League show that we have some exceptional teenagers in our sport that are capable of some magnificent scores and it has been those individuals that this competition was established and intended for. The format of the shoot was devised by Kirk Michael shooter, Tom Lord and IoM Shooting member, Brian Fozard, both offered from the outset, to supply prizes for first and second placed shooters with the IoM Shooting Club providing the prizes for third and fourth winners.
Sunday February 28th was the agreed date for this year’s match and thankfully, the installation of the 10 new electronic targets combined with the clubs previous 10, made the shoot quite entertaining for those watching the eleven entries and it was made even more interesting when some terrific results were posted, many by first time outdoor shooters. The agreed format of the competition is now established - 30 shots outdoor at 50 metres followed, after a buffet lunch, by another 30 shots - 3 cards of 10, with only the first card having ‘sighters’ which allows the shooter to readjust his sights from the outdoor shoot.
In surprisingly bright sunshine but extremely cold conditions, George Dalton-Brown (PSM) led the way from the outset posting some very impressive scores indoors and even more so once the outdoor discipline commenced. His three indoor cards recorded 294 x 300 (96, 99, 99) and when added to his 50 metre score of 295.1 (96.70, 99.30, 99.10) gave the youngster a terrific score of 589.10 with 9 X bulls, 6 points ahead of second placed Illiam Christian, last year’s winner, on 583.30 and 7 X bulls. Christian Eaton posted an identical score as Christian but lost the position on X bull countback as he recorded just 5, fourth slot went to another Port St Mary teenager, Ashley Gardner on 582.10 and 7 X bulls.

It gave Tom Lord great pleasure to present George Dalton-Brown with his prize as IoM Shooting Club Junior Champion 2016 – possibly a senior champion too in the very near future. Congratulations from all at Sinclair George and let’s hope we see a lot more of your talent during the Shooting Club’s summer season programme.
Thanks must go to Tom Lord and Brian Fozard for the organisation, Liz Jones for an excellent buffet, all those who competed and spectated and especially Derek Kermode and Ashley Gardner (Snr) for the organisation and transport for the six members of the southern club which made the competition most worthwhile.
