Men's Leagues

League 2

PWC Castletown/Abbey A 252 Fencibles A 188

Both teams went into the match unbeaten this season and already thinking about the possibility of promotion into men’s league one. Making use of two courts at CRHS, the home side started ruthlessly in the first round of matches. Fingal Watterson and Peter Hadfield second and third position respectively beat Ian Hemensley and Mark Quayle 21/17 21/14 and Baillie Watterson and Nick Thornley first and fourth position extended the lead as they proved too strong for Juan Corrin and Ian Barnes, winning 21/14 21/6.The next games to be played were closer, but Castletown/Abbey went further ahead by securing them both. Fingal Watterson and Thornley overcame Hemensley and Barnes 21/19 21/14, while Baillie Watterson and Hadfield came through to win 21/16 21/17 against Corrin and Quayle, despite a stronger Fencibles challenge in both games. As each club's top pairings faced off it was Baillie and Fingal Watterson that came out on top, beating Corrin and Hemensley for the third time this season in all leagues 21/17 21/14. The closest game of the night was between Hadfield and Thornley and visitors Quayle and Barnes, with each game going to sudden death, it was Hadfield and Thornley who held their nerves to win 21/20 21/20 to ensure maximum points for Castletown/Abbey.  BW

Although Selborne avenged their narrower defeat earlier in the season, this was a good and mostly hard-fought contest against a talented young Fencibles side, who started brightly winning four of first six games. Joel Avery and Jake Vance taking the first two games 21/18 21/20 against Adi Oen and Ean Crellin. Selborne's Shibu Augustian and Raymond Gawne then shared games 21/10 18/21 with son Matthew Gawne  and Sam Callow, before Oen and  Raymond Gawne also shared with Avery and Callow 21/14 20/21. Selborne improved as the match progressed, winning all the remaining games to clinch the match 3-0 and put themselves in a strong position overall league-wise.  RMcM

A comfortable win in the end for Rushen but there were a number of close games.
