Police are urging people to spend a fraction of what they'd shell out on a tank of heating oil in a bid to secure their winter fuel supply.
Officers want people to buy an approved lock for their fuel tanks in a bid to stop criminals targeting them over the colder months.
They say thieves target tanks when they are left visible, unsecured and easily accessible - homeowners are being advised to use garden trellis and climbing plants to make them difficult to climb.
