Contingency plans will ensure the Island's sea links are better protected this winter.
Manannan will be kept in Manx waters until the end of the year - normally the vessel is moored in the Mersey when it finishes in November.
The Steam Packet says it's a way of providing extra resilience and will allow it to react quicker if there is a problem.
MV Arrow will also be on hand to act as a freight-back up - chief executive Mark Woodward says the decision to keep Manannan hasn't been made lightly:
