Wed, 22 Jul 2015

A 63-year-old grandmother who hit and killed a cyclist in Kirk Michael last year has been handed a suspended prison sentence.

Sulby woman Linda Thompson was sentenced at Douglas Courthouse today after previously pleading guilty to causing death by careless driving.

She hit 41-year-old Kathryn Burge who was cycling along Main Road on August 4th - the physiotherapist was pulled underneath her Range Rover and died at the scene.

In court Thompson was also sentenced for other offences from 2014 including committing an act against public justice and two counts of making false representations on a Legal Aid document.

Deemster Montgomerie handed her an 18 month sentence in total - nine months for the driving offence, eight for the act against public justice and a month for making false representations.

The sentence has been suspended for two years - Thompson has also been disqualified from driving for three years and ordered to pay £500 in prosecution costs.
