Father fined for cycling on pavement

Mon, 13 Jul 2015

A disabled father from Douglas has been fined £150 for taking his six-year-old son to school on the back of his electric bike.

64-year-old Clifton Mayers was spotted by a police officer on Ballanard Road on May 14th who noticed him riding on the pavement - no one on the bike was wearing a helmet.

Mayers was subsequently charged with the offences of driving on the pavement and carrying more than one person on his cycle - he pleaded guilty through a Coroner's Admission.

The court was told whilst it appeared to be "social practice" for people to ride on the pavement it was against the law.

In a letter written to the court Mayers said he was unaware that it was an offence and found the summons "appalling" saying a warning from the police officer would have sufficed.

He was fined £50 for each offence and ordered to pay £50 in costs.
