Peel to remember rescue mission of 'The Wanderer'

Sat, 04 Apr 2015

A Manx fishing vessel and the heroics of its captain and crew will be remembered in Peel next month.

On May 7th it will be 100 years since the sinking of the Lusitania.

The luxury liner was struck by a German U-boat launched torpedo off the southern coast of Ireland in 1915.

A Peel fishing boat was in the area catching herring at the time; they were first on the scene, bringing two lifeboats in tow.

The boat sank in 18 minutes, with the efforts of ‘The Wanderer’ saving 160 lives; in total 761 survived and 1,198 people died.

We found out what Peel has planned, from Commissioner Jackie O’Halloran:
