Another close mid-table match in League 2. With PWC Castletown/Abbey’s promotion now in the bag and Microgaming Marown's relegation also confirmed, the mid-table positions were still up for grabs. This match was played in a very odd order, due to a mix up over the start time, and Vikings losing Margaret Daughen to the All Englands in Birmingham. The match got under way with both mens ties taking to the court. Second mens went the way of Vikings, with first mens going to Michael - both ties were completed in straight games. Next up were first and third mixed. Third mixed saw Vikings father and daughter pairing of David Buck and Kristina Buck continue their unbeaten season by beating Michael's Ryan Brew and Sarah Gardner 21/11 21/12. First mixed was very close, but again Vikings came out on top when Alex Townell and Lynda Cadamy beat Ben Kneale and Leanne Brew 22/20 21/19. Vikings had taken a 6-2 advantage at the half-way point. Now second and first womens took to the court, and again two close matches kept the gathering crowd enthralled. First womens saw Michael's ever impressive partnership of Vanessa Roberts and Leanne Brew taking a narrow win over Vikings new pairing of Lynda Cadamy and Kristina Buck 21/17 22/20. Second womens was even closer as Vikings Fiona Brew and Georgia Foxton beat Michael's Sarah Gardner and Carolyn Brown 17/21 23/21 21/17. Finally, and with time running out, second and fourth mixed took to the courts. Second mixed went Michael's way, but fourth mixed saw another fight to the finish, with Vikings Mark Falconer and Foxton winning through against Kirk Michael's Michael Brew and Brown 20/22 21/18 21/14. The final league placings will come down to the remaining match between Cannell Print Rushen A and Vikings B - it's sure to be another close battle. So if you want to take in a great example of the fastest racket sport in the world, you could do worse than head down to Castletown. MF

Second to fourth positions in this league have been very tight and going into this match Castletown needed to pick up all three points to secure league 1 badminton for next season and Vikings needed just 1 point. Vikings started off the stronger with Steve Quayle and Steve Allen beating Fingal Watterson and Damian Peter 21/14 21/14, this was followed up with an impressive 21/7 21/18 win for Matthew Nicholson and Sam Mills over Baillie Watterson and Peter Hadfield. Vikings won the next match courtesy of Mills and Quayle 21/12 21/13 beating Fingal Watterson and Hadfield before Baillie Watterson and Peter changed Castletown’s fortunes with a 21/13 21/18 win over Nicholson and Allen. Mills and Allen secured the match for Vikings with a 21/16 21/12 win over Peter and Hadfield. With Fingal Watterson struggling with injury the Watterson brothers conceded the last game to give Vikings a 241/148 win. SN
