Discussions are on-going to ensure government has long-term access to the landing stage in Liverpool.
The Steam Packet uses the Liverpool Pier Head landing stage when operating its Manannan sailings - however it's coming to the end of its operational life.
Owner Peel Ports Ltd is understood to be currently considering options for its replacement.
The Department of Infrastructure says over the last year it's given this matter extensive consideration and has arranged a meeting with the owners this month.
Following this it says it hopes to be in a position to decide what action will need to be taken in order to protect our "strategic sea services".
