Increase in cases of food poisoning

Follow simple steps when cooking outdoors this summer to reduce the risk of food poisoning.

The Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture has reported a spike in cases of the illness in recent weeks - attributing a large number of them to badly prepared barbecues.

The warmer weather can result in harmful bacteria turning food into potential health hazards.

Food poisoning bugs can cause severe stomach cramps, sickness and diarrhoea.

Food safety manager Ivan Bratty has this advice:
