Fishermen have pushed the queenie stocks in Manx territorial waters to the limit - with jobs now at risk as a result.
It's likely that the fishery will have to close for the rest of the year as record catches in the last four have left stocks depleted.
Environment, Food and Agriculture Minister Phil Gawne says they have to listen to the scientific experts from Bangor University.
Admitting the decision will be unpopular he says it is necessary to ensure its long term future without losing Manx fishermen along the way - and says it's a stark wakeup call:
