Anyone under the age of 25 now risks being asked for ID when in pubs and clubs.
The Challenge 25 initiative has been extended to include licenced premises as well as off licences.
The scheme is not mandatory but the Department of Home Affairs says it hopes it will be adopted as best practice.
The aim is to combat under-age drinking and protect licencees - director of legislation Julian Lalor-Smith says it's a preventative measure:
