Peel and St John’s beat both Crosby and the weather to go top of the Standard Bank Premiership yesterday (Saturday). They won by eight wickets while the match between champions Cronkbourne and Valkyres was abandoned without a ball being bowled.
Batting first, Crosby had reached 40 for 5 when rain stopped play. The game resumed two hours later with the number of overs for each side reduced to 29. The Marown team ended on 87 for 9 with Harry Rothwell hitting 22 and Danny Kniveton 16. Akkie van den Berg took 3 for 16 from 8 overs and Nick Hawke had 2 for 11.
Chris Hawke and Nick Hawke opened for the Saints at a rapid pace. With one eye on the weather, they raced to 72 before Chris was caught for 29. Nick went for 30, but Phil Littlejohns and Ollie Webster calmly guided their side home for an excellent victory.
