Tracey Skelton who won the IoMSC March Handicap on Sunday morning
Tracey Skelton who won the IoMSC March Handicap on Sunday morning

Sixteen shooters turned out on a very cold but otherwise good conditions, for the Isle of Man Shooting Clubs March monthly handicap match on Sunday morning. A very consistent series proved the winning combination for Tracey Skelton and as this was her first 50 metre match, Skelton’s handicap was relatively high, her consistent results gave her a 4 point win from Mike Clague who until his last two shots was in line to claim a personal best score. Junior shooter, Thomas Clague posted an excellent score for third slot, on the same handicap as Skelton. Just two full houses were shot during the match and both went to Andy Potter who had a gun score of 583, 3 points behind the top gun score of Mike Duncalf.

Laxey continue their grip on the League Championship
A terrific score of 492 x 500 gave the Laxey Rifle Club a win in Division 1 of the IoMRA Indoor winter league against a nine man team from Cossacks. The home team also claimed wins in both Division 2 and 3 to wrap up an evening of shooting at the Glen Gardens, Laxey.

Kirk Michael entertained an ‘on form’ IoMSC Sandsiders team and three 97’ and two 96’s were not enough to threaten the visitors. The northern team had Suzanne McKnight, Kevin Quinn and Perryn Callister all posting 97 but the opposition posted 3 x 98’s from Bill Jones, Ian Arthur and Tony Kneale. All three Divisions went in IoMSC Sandsiders favour. I know that if there are any ex shooters who may be interested in returning to the sport or indeed new shooters of any age in the Kirk Michael area, they would be made very welcome at the range alongside the Mitre pub in the village. For the visitors, Kevan Kneale and Derek Kermode both scored 98 with a delighted Dave Bould hitting 97. All three divisions were won by IoMSC Douglas.

With just 2 matches of the season left, the Division 1 honours look as though Laxey Rifle Club have one hand clasping it, however, the northern village club still have to shoot Port St Mary at home and IoMSC Douglas away, so the season is not yet over, ‘till the fat lady sings’ , as they say. IoMSC Douglas are holding onto Division 2 and Port St Mary should take the honours in Division 3.

Kirk Michael claim the H D Hamilton – Meikle Cup
The H D Hamilton – Meikle Cup Final, a match for specific classed shooters, was held on the Port St Mary Range and the winners were Kirk Michael. Unfortunately, just two teams entered the competition on the night and the runners up were Castletown. The northern team produced a surprisingly low score to win with Kevin Quinn on 96, Illiam Christian 95, Perryn Callister 96 and Alex Trafford 89 giving a team score of 376 with the Castletown team of Nigel Christian on 95, Chris Birtwhistle 94, Robin McFee 91 and Andy Bell 91 producing a score of 371. Thanks must go from the IoMRA to the Port St Mary Club for hosting the match and it is a shame that once again, the event was not supported by other clubs.

Two hundred shot in the NSRA County match round 5
Richie Arthur and Ashley Gardner (J) both shot 100 in round 5 of the NSRA County postal match full results were – Arthur 100, Gardner 100, John Wood 99, Ashley Gardner (Snr) 99, Kevan Kneale 98, Kevin Quinn 98, Harry Creevy 97, Andy Potter 97, Marion Jones 96, Mike Duncalf 96, Harry Harrison 96, Suzanne McKnight 96, Tracey Skelton 95, Bill Jones 94, Mark Cain 94, Gary Knight 94, Juan Clague 93, Nigel Christian 93, Shirley Caley 93, Chris Birtwhistle 92. The team score was 1920 whereas the opposition, Durham and Cleveland Rifle Association scored 1927.
In the junior section, the Island team lie mid table, incredibly, just a single point on aggregate behind the league leaders, Hampshire. Unfortunately, the island has lost 2 matches to Hampshire’s loss of just one. In round 5, the island was against the leaders and scored the following; - Jess Clague 98, Fergus Coulter 98, Ashley Gardner 97 and Illiam Christian 91 – a total of 384 to the oppositions 386. A hard luck score.
