Northern Counties Archery Society held their Indoor Championships

Tue, 12 Nov 2013

On Sunday the Northern Counties Archery Society held their Indoor Championships at Penrith.  This is a Portsmouth round with archers from Lancashire, Cheshire, Yorkshire, Cumbria, Northumberland and Durham and the Isle of Man competing for the top spots.  Five archers from the Isle of Man Archery Club, 2 recurve and three compound, travelled to take part.  In the recurve division, Rhys Moore shot a new pb of 537  points for the round, having made some important changes to his equipment set-up at the Club session on Thursday which obviously paid off.  Adrian Breed had a miss at the half-way stage of the shoot which obviously affected his total score, but he managed to finish with 484 points which is a season’s best score for him.  However, it was the Compound archers who came out on top.  In the ladies compound,  Joy Gough finished on 555 which was well below the pb she set last week, but nevertheless she finished with the top score of the day, her closest opponent shooting two 8s in the last end and finishing on 552, and this meant that Joy was declared the Ladies Compound Champion.  Billy Lightfoot shot steadily through the competition and finished on 567 just outside the placings.  Peter Mumford started well with two ends of 116, then went off the pace for the next dozen but managed to pick it up again towards the end and with a score of 571 finished equal third in the gents compound competition.  The surprise of the day was in the Club Team competition which was for four archers shooting in the same discipline.  Although the Isle of Man only had three compound archers competing, they submitted their combined total score of 1693 and were surprised and delighted when it was announced that they were the winners of the Club Compound Team trophy.

The next off-Island competition will be the National Indoor Championships to be held a Coventry at the beginning of December, with both Junior and Senior archers from the Island travelling to compete.
