The Department of Health is looking to introduce new legislation which will ensure doctors are fit to practice by the General Medical Council.
Under the proposals the practitioners will be assessed every five years, echoing the UK's current system.
Th department says the new system is essential for the Island to be able to continue to have doctors practising here as the existing legislation previously didn't cover the crown dependencies.
If passed it would also see tighter regulation of chiropractors and osteopaths practising here.
A consultation on the matter has launched today and will run until Monday, December 2nd.
