The IoM Archery Club having moved from Ronaldsway to a new shooting ground at Greeba, were hoping the weather would be kind and allow them to get in a full day’s shoot. Unfortunately the morning was a wash out but with more settled weather promised for the afternoon the archers assembled at 1:30 to shoot a ½ Metric 1. The round consists of one and a half dozen arrows at each of four distances 70, 60, 50 and 30m.
The period of settled weather never materialized and the archers had to contend with gusting wind and intermittent showers. The conditions understandably affected those starting their first outdoor season more than the others.
The Men’s Compound division saw a three way shoot-out between Pete Mumford, Dave Moore and Colin Moore. Colin started strongly to lead by 2 points at the end of the first distance but was leapfrogged by Mumford by the end of the second distance. Mumford never looked back from that point and went on the outdistance Dave Moore, who eventually came second, by 37 points. The highest score of the day was recorded by Sarah Rigby.
In the Recurve division only two senior archers showed up. Bod Boland, shooting outdoors for only the second time, was unhappy with his form. Barbara Harris, shooting for the first time in a number of weeks, showed what a lack of practice can do to an archer and posted a score well below what she is capable of.
Three Juniors were also shooting. Adam Wright and Charlotte Harris shot a Metric III round consisting of three dozen arrows at each of two distances 50 and 40m. While newcomer Josh Trafford shooting outdoors for the first time ever shot a Short Metric III under the guidance of Club Treasurer Joy Gough.
Aalin and Kirsten George also braved the weather to get in some practice ahead of their Team GB appearance at the Junior Europa Cup in Solvenia beginning on May 12th. They shot the Fita 50 round which has become the standard for Compound Archery Competitions.
