Snow update

Large areas of the Island remain at a standstill as thick snow causes problems with travel.

Although the west has been worst hit, people Island-wide are advised only to make essential journeys.

Kirk Michael has been completely cut off today with emergency workers who live in the village providing fire, police and medical cover.

A single track has now been cleared through the snow on the main road there for use by emergency and supply vehicles and members of the public are being asked not to use it at the moment.

The commissioner's hall in Kirk Michael is now open as a base, so people can go there to get warm or speak to services.

The main advice though is for people to stay inside warm and safe.

The snowfall and gales have wreaked havoc with the MEA's network in some areas and some homes have been left without power.

The MEA reports supplies have now been restored in areas of Foxdale, Crosby, Main Road Ballaugh, Bishop's Court, Laxey, Agneash, Dhoon and Ballaragh.

Work continues to reconnect those without electricity.

The power cuts have also caused problems for Manx Telecom's mobile coverage especially in Ballaugh, the Creg ny Baa area and Colby.

Reduced bus services are running today.

Routes 5 and 6 are serving Douglas and Peel, with routes starting and terminating at QE2 School.

Route 3 is operating only on the main roads between Ramsey and Douglas.

People travelling on other routes should check to see whether or not they are operating.

Key roads that are closed today include the whole of the Mountain Road and all roads leading to it, the Peel to Kirk Michael Coast Road, the Ballamodha and Cronk y Voddy.

The last of the snow is supposed to die out tonight but it's still forecast to be very windy with a widespread frost and icy conditions are set to freeze the fallen snow, causing further issues for road users.
