It's hoped the demolition of Park Road School won't impact too much on people living nearby.
Crews will arrive on site today for the start of the 12-week scheme to demolish the building.
The school opened in 1894 but became redundant last year when the new facility opened at Bemahague in Onchan.
The site is likely to be used for social housing, although firm plans will be drawn up over the next year.
Residents could be inconvenienced by road closures at certain times while the demolition work is carried out.
Architect Phil Halliwell says the school needs to come down now even though a new development isn't imminent:
