With the forecasts of a cold snap until mid February and a flu virus strain moving in from North America people in the ‘at risk’ health category are encouraged to get their flu vaccination.
The at risk category consists of people aged 65 and above, those with chronic diseases and pregnant women.
Several states in the US have reported very high levels of the virus with warnings sent out to healthcare providers to be prepared to deal with an increased workload.
If you feel you have the flu you’re advised to keep yourself isolated from others, especially those in the at risk category, as well as adhering to strict levels of hygiene.
Dr Paul Emerson from Public Health has said ignoring the appeal could carry serious health implications:
