The Met Office has confirmed that 2012 will be recognised as the second wettest year since records began on the Island.
The bulk of the rainfall came in the final half of the year after a relatively dry and warm spring.
Motorists bore the brunt of the rain, with excessive downpours in the last two months of the year leading to severe flooding in some areas.
Forecaster Colin Garshore says it will take extensive research from scientists to determine the reason for the increasingly soggy summers, both here and in the UK.
He says the rainfall came within millimeters of breaking the record:
