Islander falls victim to money scam

Wed, 10 Oct 2012

The Office of Fair Trading is warning of a new scam which has resulted in a local resident losing a major sum of money.

This latest scam is coming through as a text message offering the individual a loan from a UK lender.

In this case the person was seeking a small loan and responded to the text.

He was advised the loan had been agreed and the first repayment was to be paid via the Moneygram service, and was due immediately.

After a second repayment it was clear the loan wasn’t going to materialise, and the money handed over has not been returned.

Consumers are warned to be suspicious of any sort of unsolicited email, letter or phone call, even if they’re being offered something that is of interest to them.
