The new £33 million school at Bemahague in Onchan has become the first government building to win an award for designing out crime.

St Ninian’s Lower School has received the 'Secured by Design' benchmark after architects implemented a number of security measures into the school’s layout.

As well as the physical security, such as locks on doors and windows, the school has been designed to have limited “hidden space” to deter people from committing crime.

Mike Radcliffe, who is the police’s architectural liaison officer, said it wasn’t about creating a prison:
