The Office of Fair Trading has warned people against buying heavily discounted memory foam mattresses saying they are highly dangerous.

Enforcement officers recently bought two mattresses from a trader selling from a van and sent them away for testing.

Tests showed that the filling material failed an ignitability test – with the OFT warning that they don’t comply with current safety regulations and are highly flammable.

The OFT say they are concerned that the mattresses are being sold through the classifieds sections of the local newspapers and what may appear to be a bargain could turn into a potential death trap.

Anyone who is concerned that they have purchased a mattress like this is asked to contact Trading Standards on 686520.
