The Chief Executive of the Department of Education and Children says private nurseries aren't of a lesser quality than Government run preschools.

Stuart Dobson says many follow some if not all of the early years curriculum.

The DEC is providing a £350 grant for parents to put towards private nursery places as it's closing its preschools this summer, whilst those whose children would be eligible for free school meals will get a further £800.

All nurseries will have to meet certain criteria to ensure they're up to scratch before being allowed to take part in the scheme.

Private providers will be given the chance to let DEC premises.
