Politicians raise questions over education cuts

Thu, 15 Mar 2012

Cuts to education services will dominate the question paper at this month's sitting of Tynwald.

MLC David Callister will ask the Chief Minister to make statements on how the services currently provided by the Family Library and Mobile Library will continue after August.

He'll also ask Education Minister Peter Karran when the Mobile Library vehicle was ordered, how much it cost, and what will happen to it when funding for the Mobile Library ends in the summer.

Dudley Butt, who quit the Department of Education and Children following the announcement that all Government funded nurseries and preschools will close, also has a number of questions.

He'll ask Allan Bell if the Government has a strategy for early years education.

Mr Karran will also be asked by Mr Butt about the number of staff that need to be redeployed as a result of the cuts, and how many times he's visited the Family Library and Mobile Library.

Meanwhile, Douglas East MHK Brenda Cannell will ask Mr Bell about his working group looking into the future provision of preschool education.

All the questions will be answered when Tynwald sits from Tuesday next week.
