Road tax to go up by 6%

Thu, 08 Mar 2012

Road tax is due to go up by 6% from next month.

The increase was approved in Tynwald in January.

The change also irons out an anomaly in emissions based duty, which means some vehicles can be charged different rates depending on where they were first registered.

The Department of Infrastructure says it will spend the extra income it receives on road maintenance.

Director of Highways Richard Pearson recognises the increase might be unpopular, but says the extra funds are desperately needed.[Play media file below]
