Advocate loses appeal against her convictions

Fri, 24 Feb 2012

An advocate convicted of falsifying documents and facilitating the use of criminal property has had her appeal against her conviction dismissed.

Jenny Dee Holt was found guilty of the offences last year, having accepted £400,000 of stolen funds to pay for legal fees from Trevor and Wendy Baines ahead of their trial for money laundering and false accounting offences.

Her advocate told the appeal her convictions were unsafe, accusing the Deemster in charge of the trial of prejudice whilst summing up the case.

The appeal court dismissed such claims.

An appeal by the Attorney General to increase Miss Holt's sentence was also rejected.

He believed the 12 month suspended jail term was too lenient.

However the court decided not to impose a harsher sentence as she had not personally gained from her crimes.
