Overhead cables stolen from electric railway

Fri, 17 Feb 2012

A number of people have been arrested after around 70 metres of copper cable was cut down from the Manx Electric Railway tramlines near the Everlasting Bend.

It's believed the cable was cut down between the end of January and Tuesday this week.

Officers are warning would-be thieves that there's no guarantee the lines won't be live despite it being out of season, as maintenance work is often carried out in the winter months.

The stolen cable has now been recovered, but police are still seeking witnesses.

It's thought the thieves remained in the area for some time after cutting the cable down to cut it into more manageable lengths.

Anyone who can help police with their enquiries is asked to contact Onchan Police Station.
