Victim loses £5,000 in online shopping scam

Tue, 14 Feb 2012

An Island resident is £5,000 out of pocket after falling victim to online fraudsters.

It's just one of several cases that have been reported to Manx police recently by people who have been conned whilst shopping on the internet.

Another local victim recently lost over £1,000.

The recent scams have seen shopppers buying goods from web pages or auction sites, but at the last minute they've been told there is a problem with the secure PayPal payment method.

Instead, they've then been asked to pay by bank transfer but the goods are not received and the culprits are very hard to track down.

PC Kath Giles has been involved with the cases and has advice for people who shop online.[play media file below]
