Ramsey Town Commissioners are welcoming the rejection of a planning application for a Next store on the Spring Valley Industrial Estate.
The local authority is applauding the Government for recognising what it calls the detrimental effect more out of town retail operations would have Island wide.
It was confirmed earlier this month that the planning application by Next to open a store selling household and decorating items alongside children's clothing had been turned down.
The Commissioners say they'll be investing in regeneration schemes to bring more shoppers into town centres rather than sending them out of the towns.
The board believes out of town retailing would damage the Island's town shopping centres ultimately having a negative impact on the Manx economy.
