The Illiam Dhone Ceremony at Hango Hill could be held against a backdrop of graffiti again next week- although it's of a very different nature to that seen last time round.

Vandals have been at work on the Promenade in Castletown, where the annual service to commemorate the so-called Manx martyr will be held on Monday.

Obscene pictures have been sprayed in blue paint on the ruins at the monument, as well as on the road and nearby walls.

Police describe the drawings as 'phallic symbols.'

They were discovered on Christmas Eve.

Last year nationalist graffiti appeared in the area, although this latest case isn't believed to be politically motivated.

Police are investigating and are appealing for anyone with information to contact them.
