A senior officer from the Department of Education has been explaining the policy for closing schools during bad weather.
When wintry conditions are forecast, the department and Energy FM are bombarded with calls from parents wanting to know if the schools are open.
John Gill says if they become aware of bad weather they contact the Met Office, Bus Vannin, the emergency services and the Department of Infrastructure first thing in the morning.
Once they have all the information it's up to the Education Minister to make a decision on the schools.
This will be done before 7.45am and Energy FM will be notified straight away.
John Gill says if it hasn't been stated that schools are shut, it's safe to assume they're open.[Play media file below]
