The amount of legal aid handed out by the Manx Government has more than tripled over the last five years.
In the 2006 to 2007 financial year, £1.37million worth of legal costs were paid out.
Last year the total was over £4.3million.
Big jumps have been seen in the amount paid for criminal legal aid, and costs for family matters in civil cases.
Legal aid is provided by the Treasury to those involved in court cases who cannot afford legal representation.
The figures were revealed in this week's House of Keys written answers.
