A planning application to build a private meat plant at a farm in Marown has been rejected.
Approval in principal was sought by Ellerslie Farm in July.
It was hoped it would give farmers an alternative to the Island’s meat processing plant at Tromode.
Planners refused the application last week.
The reason given was the land isn't zoned for commercial use and concerns about how the operation would affect water courses.
At the moment, the Island's Food Act also prohibits the use of private slaughterhouses not provided by the Department of Infrastructure.
