Shoprite says shoppers in Castletown are already well served with convenience stores.
The Manx supermarket chain has issued a statement in response to news that a Tesco Express will open in the town centre, near to an existing Shoprite store.
It doesn't directly comment on Tesco's plans but talks about its own strategy for future development in the south.
It says it's already presented an idea for a broader food market store in Ballasalla in the Southern Area Plan.
The proposed supermarket would be part of a wider business park development.
Shoprite says its plans would compliment day to day convenience shops in nearby towns, provide handy parking and allow servicing and access that won't cause disruption to Castletown residents or independent traders.
There's been some concern that the Tesco Express store will worsen current parking issues in Castletown.
