The Island's new general surgeon will start work in the New Year.
The Department of Health has announced that a highly experienced surgeon has accepted the role, and that she'll start work in early 2012 subject to pre-employment checks.
As part of the role, she'll take on the Island's breast care programme.
The decision to appoint a general surgeon with an interest in breast care was met with anger by some, who saw the decision not to keep a specialist breast surgeon as a downgrading of the service.
The new surgeon is described as a highly experienced breast surgeon who has worked as a consultant surgeon for the last eleven years, with experience in oncoplastic surgery and reconstructive breast surgery.
