Contractors have begun work to stabilise Queen's Pier in Ramsey.
The project will cost the tax payer over £1.7 million.
The vote to spend the money just scraped through in Tynwald last month.
Some politicians were unhappy about committing the cash-strapped government to the scheme.
Workmen from a UK marine engineering company have now started the task of making the structure more secure, so it doesn't pose a danger.
The work also aims to stop the pier's condition getting any worse until the government finally gets round to deciding what will be done with it in the long-term.
