People needing complicated joint replacement surgery may no longer have to be treated off-island.
The Department of Health says around 30 people per year need this sort of operation.
It can now be carried out here following the appointment of a consultant orthopaedic surgeon who is an expert in the field.
The Henry Bloom Noble Healthcare Trust funded the new equipment.
The department says carrying out complex joint replacements on the Island will be cost effective and better for patients.
