Not supporting Queen's Pier works would have been "criminal"

Fri, 15 Apr 2011

The Liberal Vannin Party says it would have been criminal not to vote in favour of spending nearly £1.8million on Queen's Pier in Ramsey.

The Party has issued a statement, pointing out that the Manx Government is legally required to maintain the pier, as it is a registered structure.

In a lengthy debate, some members questioned whether the money could be put to better use elsewhere.

Liberal Vannin MHK Peter Karran said he didn't want to spend the money, but that the law is the law.

Infrastructure Minister Phil Gawne had said ahead of April's Tynwald that the pier would have to be pulled down if the works weren't approved.

The motion passed by one vote, although some members hadn't returned to the court after the tea break.
