Tynwald is debating the future of the Queen's Pier in Ramsey.
Infrastructure Minister Phil Gawne is asking for £1.8m to protect the structure and make it safe.
This would pave the way for future refurbishment, which would cost another £10m or more.
Given the fears about the government's finances and the state of the economy, spending money on fixing the pier is a controversial issue.
Demolition would cost £2.2m pounds and Mr Gawne has already said he'll come back to Tynwald asking for permission to knock it down, if politicians vote no today.
