The Department of Community, Culture and Leisure says it's doing all it can to avoid redundancies within its public transport engineering section.
Yesterday it was confirmed that 34 members of staff had been told that their jobs were at risk.
A consultation to find other ways to make savings is now underway.
The employees side of the Whitley Council reacted angrily to the news.
However, the Department says it would like to work with the unions to keep staff informed.
Initially, 11 posts could be lost, with a second group of 11 also at risk
