Teenager had knife to 'protect himself'

Fri, 28 Aug 2015

A Peel teenager who was caught carrying a knife, which he said was to protect himself, will be sentenced next month.

19-year-old Billy Sumner appeared at Douglas Courthouse earlier this week where he admitted possessing a bladed article in a public place.

Police arrested him in Douglas in the early hours of August 1st - they were trying to locate him in connection to another matter and he was spotted running from the scene.

They used PAVA spray to incapacitate him and the sheathed fixed blade knife was found - he told officers he'd been threatened recently adding "there are a lot of people who don't like me".

Social enquiry reports have been requested before Sumner is sentenced on September 22nd - he's been bailed in the meantime.
